Scientific output consists of the construction of scientific knowledge. Health sciences are an area of knowledge of significant social and economic interest; therefore, an analysis of the scientific output of Brazilian researchers in Optometry can contribute to improving the level of research in this science. It is exploratory research, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, with the aim of investigating scientific output in Optometry between 2001 and 2021. The source of the data, as well as the collection procedure, was bibliographical and documentary research. The research data was found based on selected articles, theses and dissertations. 38 items of scientific output related to the science of Optometry were selected, namely: scientific articles (84.22%), Master's dissertations (13.13%) and Doctoral theses (13.15%). Between 2001 and 2020, there was a low number of publications in Optometry, with an increase in the number of publications in 2021. With regards to the method, it can be seen that a greater number of references used the qualitative method. The index with the largest number of articles is Google Scholar (41.67%), followed by Scielo (25%) and Latindex (22.22%). The scientific output covers the knowledge areas of Optometry, highlighting: visual acuity, refractive errors, visual accommodation, lenses and glasses.
