This article aims to characterize the development of cooperatives in agriculture in the Southern of Brazil, based on data from the 2006 and 2017 Agricultural Censuses. This paper defines and quantifies agricultural establishments that declared association with cooperatives through the mapping of characteristics of producers and production, socioeconomic characteristics and typologies of family farming. The methodology is based on analysis of secondary data from the 2006 and 2017 IBGE Agricultural Censuses, taken from the SIDRA website, using the variable 'association to the cooperative'. The results reveal a tendency to strengthen cooperativism in agriculture in the Southern of Brazil. It is hoped that these results can be taken as important indicators for deeper analysis of the political, social and economic context in which Brazilian agriculture is inserted and how cooperativism can enhance its development.
