The Question of Palmas, in which Brazil and Argentina disputed the area that currently corresponds to the west of the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, had arbitration favorable to the Brazilian interest, fundamentally, due to the principle of uti possidetis. This principle determines that the right to a territory is based on the possession that has been established over it. In the Contestado Question, in which part of the same area was disputed by the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, the principle was again invoked. The state of Paraná based its claim on the possession it claimed to have exercised over the disputed territory. However, the decisions of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) won the case for Santa Catarina. The sentence was never fulfilled and the dispute was resolved through an agreement between the two entities, in 1916. The municipality of Canoinhas is located in the space that was disputed by the two states. In view of this, the objective was to analyze how the process of occupation of the territory of Canoinha occurred. The achievement of the objective was materialized through inductive research, of an explanatory nature, which used bibliographic and documentary research as techniques. The latter, based on the city’s first death book. It was verified, between the years 1903 and 1911, through the deaths of adults who had their birthplace indicated, that 74.23% of the deceased were from Paraná by origin.
