Abstract

The research presents population movements in Brazil from 1940 to 2019, in the five major regions, with emphasis on the Ijuí Intermediate Region, which is one of the eight intermediate regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and one of the 134 intermediate regions of the Brazil, created by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics in 2017. The Intermediate Region of Ijuí consists of the immediate regions of Santa Rosa, São Luiz Gonzaga, Cerro Largo, Santo Ângelo, Três de Maio and Três Passos. The research is based on the theoretical-methodological path that analyzes population movements, when interpreting secondary statistical data, relies on quali-quantitative studies, mixed methods strategies, which helped in achieving the results, in understanding the spatial construction, which was given by the search for employment and income, security. It means understanding the population movement in the Ijuí Intermediate Region, through the flow of people, through the process of modernizing agriculture, through urbanization, through the definition of regional poles, through the concentration of economic activities and a set of public policies that privileged spatiality, concentrating productive activities, employment and income as the main inducing elements of the movements. As a result, the Intermediate Region of Ijuí presents a flow of residents towards the regional municipality with the largest urban population and with more employment and income alternatives. The analysis allows us to infer that poorer geographical spaces, with climatic problems and dependent on primary activities, mainly family farming, tend to lose population to larger centers and with more dynamic productive activities.
