The article describes the historical trajectory of the Master's and Doctoral Programs in Regional Planning and City Management at the Candido Mendes University (UCAM-Campos) in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil; reveals the trajectories of the higher education institution to which this program belongs; and analyzes the major characteristics and challenges addressed from 2001 to 2021. Its methodology is historical-descriptive based on the scientific literature on teaching and research in urban and regional planning, documents in the field, the institutional plan of this university, and the program documents. The results demonstrate the program has been responding properly to the trends in the area because of its historical institutional background of considering knowledge oriented to reality in a multidisciplinary way, integrating teaching, research, and extension, and for its significant regional integration. The major challenges are its internationalization and the adequacy of its journal to the quality standards of scientific journals.
