Brief considerations on local food, terroir, geographical indications and gastronomic tourism

The article presents terroir as a fundamental element for the emergence of special agrifood products, such as geographical indications. Here, the link between local food, terroir, geographical indications (GIs) and gastronomic tourism is presented, as well as identifying the types of geographical indications that exist in Brazil. It is an exploratory research based on literature review. Among the research findings, the communication power of food and beverages is noted; that terroir must be understood as a broad word-notion in order to have no meaning reduced to territory; whereas there are currently 74 registered geographical indications in Brazil, 65 domestic and 9 foreign, which are divided into Indication of Origin (IP) and Denomination of Origin (DO); and what tourism activity, especially for gastronomic tourism, can use the terroir products, such as geographical indications, for development, and creation of various products for gastronomic tourism, which emphasize in culture and identity from food and beverages.
