Process management needs good management so that access to data and information is available in a timely manner, generating competitive advantage and improving execution. In this direction, the objective of this research is to promote a mapping of processes to improve performance in document management at the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte – IFRN Campus Natal Central. This is an applied, descriptive, qualitative research with procedures based on action research, using participant observation. In the results, different operational steps were identified for the elaboration of the flowchart. However, the analyzes carried out in the academic board suggest some bottlenecks in the destination of the documents. As well as the files found in the board are from the year 2001 to the year 2016, and are exclusively on paper, what not yet been digitized. It is concluded that it is necessary to change the way documents are managed in organizations and especially in understanding the historical importance of a collection.
