The Law 11.340 /06, also known as Maria da Penha Law, define protection measures for women who are victims of domestic and family violence. The approval of the Law brought measures that make it possible to encourage victims to seek more effective responses from the State. This article aims to demonstrate how often domestic and family violence against women occurs. Therefore, it is proposed to present reflections and analyze the influence of an historical evolution of cultural habits based on patriarchal discourses. This is one of the most common manifestations of violence, domination of man’s strenght and power. The deductive methoodology was used, through bibliographic and jurisprudential review technique. It is concluded that thre is a need to demand publics policie focused not only on combating the violence, but also in stimulating economic empowerment and female entrepreneurship, wich could assist in economic autonomy and equal opportunities in the labour market.
