The solid waste policy in municipalities of the western region of Santa Catarina state, Brazil

Concern for the natural and urban environment is currently global and there is almost widespread recognition of the importance of avoiding negative environmental impacts. This research aims to demonstrate the adequacy level between solid waste management practice and what the National Policy of this theme advocates in cities located in the western region of Santa Catarina. Specifically, expose initiatives that influence the implementation of selective collection and recycling in cities of the west of Santa Catarina; address the challenges, success factors and impacts of government initiatives implemented to make the cities surveyed sustainable and, finally, to verify what are the environmental education initiatives, focused on solid waste management in the cities surveyed. As for the approach, it is considered a qualitative study. As for the objectives, we opted for descriptive research and approach. The research is considered bibliographic. It was concluded that Environmental Education should be started in schools, changing the behavior of children and teachers, together with society and administrative bodies. The laws are here to be met, it is necessary that the projects ensure a greater reach of the established goals.
