Abstract

Objective: To know the reasons associated with the option of women for gestation in old age. Method: This is a qualitative study, carried out with fifteen women aged 35 or over, primiparous women who opted for late pregnancy and who were trying to conceive less than a year ago. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were applied and data analysis followed content analysis. Results: From the data analysis, four thematic categories emerged: obstacles encountered by women in the search for motherhood; influences on the decision for late pregnancy; the sociocultural perspective of motherhood and the representations of late motherhood in the perception of women”. Maternity in old age converges with the reduction of fertility worldwide, constituting a public health problem. The search for assisted fertilization treatments and with it the pilgrimage in clinics, high treatment costs and emotional stress are constant in this process. Conclusions: It was possible to know that the option of women for late pregnancy is influenced by multiple factors, among them, the search for the insertion of women in the labor market, professional training, financial stability, among others.
