Abstract

The modernization of Brazilian society has been studied by several researchers in the Humanities area. Country music, however, has received little attention so far as a source for understanding this phenomenon. This article intends, through the analysis of the work of player guitar Tião Carreiro, to de code how his songs helped to construct a certain narrative about rurality throughout the process of urbanization of the country. It is argued that his music may provide a window into understanding certain aspects of Brazilian modernization during the second half of the twentieth century, especially with regard to the social experience of millions of people who migrated from countryside to the cities.

Keywords: Modernity. Country Music. Brazil.
