The article analyzes socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of families benefiting from the National Rural Housing Program (PNHR), in the municipalities of Santa Cruz do Sul, Sinimbu, Vale do Sol and Herveiras, located in Vale do Rio Pardo, in Rio Grande do Sul. The article was prepared based on qualitative research, carried out through semi-structured interviews, with thirty families benefiting from the Program. It is indicated that housing policies in rural areas are important to guarantee families linked to family farming access to housing, better living and working conditions, and integration into social and political networks. However, living in rural areas is still a condition characterized by persistent difficulties in accessing the rights to health, education, basic sanitation, drinking water, production infrastructure and marketing of production.
