The study aimed to analyze the different variables that characterize rural development for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the years 2006 and 2017. The methodological designs consider the use of multisectoral indicators in order to observe socioeconomic aspects from the analysis of four dimensions: population, structure and economic performance, well-being and equity and environmental. The results indicate that rural development presupposes the improvement of the social and economic aspects of the population residing in this environment. The rural area of Rio Grande do Sul, in the analyzed period, has been showing improvements in the expansion of the infrastructure of the inhabitants, but there was a decrease in the rural population. Despite advances in environmental conservation, there are indications denoting that the use of pesticides in agricultural production processes may be limiting rural development in aspects such as the well-being and health of the resident population.
