Abstract

In 2006 and 2007, the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS) sought to consolidate itself as a University, needing to increase the degree of verticalization in teaching. In view of this, investments were made in teacher training for the purpose of creating and consolidating Postgraduate Studies within the institution. Born of these efforts, in 2014, associated with the actions of professors from the UEMS staff, the Regional Development and Productive Systems Postgraduate Program (PPGDRS), which was also boosted by the conditions of vulnerability of the territories of the western and southern frontier of Mato Grosso do Sul. This article aims to discuss the development of the Master's Program in Regional Development and Production Systems (PPGDRS), its trajectory and challenges, in order to be an entity that promotes territorial development, especially in the southern axis frontier and south-mato-grossense west frontier. To this end, the concepts of development and regional development are also discussed, as well as their challenges with a focus on vulnerable regions, based on a bibliographic and documentary methodological structure. It should be noted that the PPGDRS came to fulfill an important role for regional development, and that it has as a challenge to promote development, issues related to cultural and institutional aspects.
