The growing number of small family farming economic organizations in Brazil, central actors in rural development, is counterbalanced by their various managerial weaknesses. The provision of adequate technical assistance is, therefore, a strategic axis of rural development policies. This work contributes to the foundation of technical assistance methods aimed at the consolidation of these organizations. It analyzes its managerial logic and the contribution of technical assistance paradigms for its improvement. A case study in Bahia characterizes the effective offer of technical assistance and allows to discuss the identification of its demand. There is a lack of capacity to improve the management of organizations in the initial or transition phase of their collective project. It proposes guidelines to identify the demands and modalities of public technical assistance policies for this public.
