This article aimed to identify the sources of growth of the main agricultural crops in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul from 2006 to 2017. The analysis was carried out using the shift-share method, also known as structural-differential. The explanatory factors of the evolution of the production were the area, yield and geographical location effects. The changes in cultivated area were subdivided into scale and substitution effects. The results show that the agricultural sector of Mato Grosso do Sul is heavily dependent on soybean, corn and sugar cane crops. They also show that among the explanatory factors, the most highlighted one was the scale effect, it was positive over the whole period and sub periods analyzed. Finally, we concluded that the production increased more due to the expansion of the cultivated area than by productivity gains. It evidences the existence of a less dynamic agricultural sector in the state.
Keywords: Temporary crops. Productive dynamics. Shift-share.
