Income poverty in Brazil, urban and rural, from 2012 to 2018

Abstract

Poverty is a phenomenon could affect individuals in different ways, being the most common the income insufficiency, also known as monetary poverty. For the Brazilian case, monetary poverty affect a significant portion of the population, motivating the articulation for public policies to eradicate poverty in the country. In face of this challenge the aim of this paper is measure the monetary poverty in Brazil calculating the Headcount poverty and other indicators for all states from Brazil using data from PNADC survey – PNAD contínua – for the period from 2012 to 2018. The results shown the monetary poverty for more than 28% of the Brazilian population and that income insufficiency is more severe for North and Northwest regions, mainly in rural areas. This study contributes to the thematic at hand by highlighting the relevance of economic cycles in poverty indicators in Brazil.
