Meeting the needs and desires of humanity are considered basic objectives of development, in this context sustainable development has the challenge of balancing social, environmental and economic issues. The use of sustainable rural development indicators aims to evaluate a particular system within a conceptual reality and thus allow the quantification of complex phenomena. Under this approach, a study was conducted to analyze the socioeconomic sustainability of rural development in the city of Rolante /RS. For this, a qualitative-descriptive research was carried out, with data originated, basically, from secondary sources, mainly from statistical research based on census data. The results of the study indicate a small increase in the rural population and the aging of this population, although the personnel employed in agricultural production has decreased. With regard to the dimensions of sustainability of rural development, the economic issue presents a positive evolution in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the municipality's agricultural GDP. The social dimension shows an MHDI that places the municipality in the Middle Human Development range, with the rural educational aspect pointing to the need for actions with the purpose of increasing the education level of the municipal rural population.
