Abstract

This article discusses about Goiania’s urban sprawl and fragmentation of territory from the 1960s when there was a demographic explosion associated with the attempt of urban planning through the elaboration a marsterplan: Plano de Desenvolvimento Integrado de Goiânia by Jorge Wilheim. This legislation sought to direct urban growth by stimulating the occupation of suburban areas once it took as its guidelines: restructuring of main streets, implantation the large equipments and social housing in these areas or outside of the urban perimeter. It is assumed that the urban structuring by main streets defined the spatial configuration of an urban network, allows integration among others municipalities, that are in the Metropolitan Region of Goiania (RMG). In this process, it has the transformation of a city based on the Modern Movement’s ideas in a regional metropolis whose current landscape reflects a contemporary urban condition. By this, the city has a territory’s fragmentation and articulations between disperse and low densities parts. In view of the spread configuration of Goiania, this article discusses the main transformations and permanence bounded in the territory, seeking to establish periods in which these phenomena are clearer. For this purpose, it is considered the actuation of agents producing the space as well as the urban dynamics, aiming at the development cartography of the urban history of Goiania, as result of the research, still in progress. The first results argue the formation of new centralities and diffuse relations between different parts of the city. Also occurs dissolution of the principles as centre and periphery or the dichotomy between rural and urban areas, is practically non-existent. During the PDIG’s 1969, Goiania underwent a process of spatial reorganization, in which urban growth and densification were oriented, despite urban fragmentation. The thematic maps contribute to reading these processes, verifying the metropolization phenomenon, new centralities and areas interest by public and private’s agents.
