The aim of this research was to find evidence on the state of the art of research into the relationship between the governance process and x-efficiency in credit unions, based on international scientific literature. The systematic literature review technique was used, which covers three stages: (1) planning the review, (2) carrying out the review and (3) disseminating the knowledge. To this end, we used a textual corpus containing 29 primary articles collected from the Scopus and Web of Science journal databases. The results show that the word clouds formulated from the co-occurrence analysis of the content extracted from the abstracts of the corpus faithfully reflect the purposes of the research with the metrics established by the respective authors and, as a contribution, provide an analytical approach to identify the elements that assess the operational efficiency of these institutions and the inefficiency in the allocation of resources, as well as insights into management performance and the use of technologies.
Key words: systematic literature review, cooperative efficiency, management performance, strategic decisions, financial institutions.
